Well, "oh, sounds krautrock"... but why? and who?
Ohr (label) did the Kosmische Musik, Faust is krautrock, ...
so much bands and connections : Can, Neu!, Kraftwerk, Cluster, Ash Ra tempel / Ashra / Goettsching, Cosmic Jokers, Wegmueller, etc etc...

you can add any new german bands/project from 1965 to 1975(circa) and read the term krautrock around. But is there a real sense to review/think about (for example) Guru Guru or Popol Vuh as krautrock? I think not really.

Isn't it a "pulse" story?
I really feel krautrock-music when I hear Zappi, Klaus Dinger or Jaki Liebezeit drumming in communication with their collectives.
What is '(the) Krautrock' for you?
Just curious ;)

"Real" Krautrock doesn´t exist.

The six volumes of "Kraut & Rüben" do (I think) clever differences about the several meanings of the word

1. german folk-alike stuff (most releases on Pilz etc.)
2. german singer-/songwriter (some on Ohr, mostly private pressings)
3. german hardrock/prog (Lucifer´s friend, Birth Control etc)
4. psychedelic (Amon Düül, Os Mundi etc.)
5. non angloamerican rock (Can, Neu, Guru Guru etc)
6. electronic (inclusive the acoustic minimal bands)

Most interestig points are 5 and 6, cause these are the music styles the germans can call "their own".
1 to 4 were recorded worldwide, but electronix and the non UK/US-influenced rock stuff is a german thing, so let´s say "Kraut". (yeah, I know I know: the french are also electronic pioneers ... love it!)

But: most collectors worldwide tell everything "Kraut" if it´s between 1969 and later 7Ts and from Germany, Switzerland or Austria. Completely bullshit, cause 99% of the hardrock, softrock, rockrock shit recorded in Germany in this time was terrible and poor mans versions of great british or US bands.

It´s hard (maybe impossible) to find bands like Cosmic Jokers, Neu, Harmonia, Kraftwerk etc. outside Germany in this time, but it was easy to find poor british (or american) Hardrock in Germany. That´s it.

Kraut can´t be Hardrock, Folk, Singer-/Songwriter etc. Kraut must be something typical for Germany, like cuckoo clocks, schnitzel, sauerkraut or Cluster.

It is a label. A tag. It means nothing, but it can be useful if we let it be. More often than not I use it in the context of 'beat' oriented music such as Can or Neu! but I see no problem with the intersections with electronic music being included. It comes down to context and whether its helpful to the conversation. If the conversation is only to argue over the minutiae of what categories particular bands (who often changed over time) should belong to it gets old quickly. :)
