Downloaded "Village of the Pharaohs" from one of those rarities blogs a while back- I like it muchly. But I have to say that everything else I've heard by him has been precisely the kind of silky-smooth, bordering on cocktail-bar, jazz-lite that I'd expected NOT to hear from someone with his reputation. Can anyone shed any light on this conundrum?

he gets worse as he gets older. try um-allah-hum or thembi for a better idea of what he can do.

having said that, ultimately he follows the last steps of Coltrane down a dead end. it doesn't take long to do, then it's over...

i've just bought a new biography of 'trane, which i have yet to read, but it's thesis is that 'trane essentially exhausted jazz, that there was nothing to do after trane from within the tradition. therefore either people got out (in the west - Bailey, Brotzman, Parker, more), or they stayed in (Sanders)... but from within there was nowhere left to go.

to the extent that i understand the argument i agree with it....

nevertheless, sanders has some beautiful moments... (hum-allah-hum is tremendous despite everything imho)

Listening to Pharaoh Sanders leads pretty directly to listening to Alice Coltrane. This is A Bad Thing.

Interesting.

It's fair to say that prior to taking a punt on "Village of the Pharaohs" (inasmuch as grabbing a free download is taking a punt), everything I'd heard by him was much more recent- his contributions to various Bill Laswell-related albums, or to the 23 Skidoo reunion album a few years ago (an album that was, for the most part, one of the most disappointing musical experiences of my life).

He did add some nice touches to the excellent Ask The Ages by Sonny Sharrock - but Sonny was the real star of that album. Its strange that some of these extreme msicians seem to come up against a wall after a lifetime on the outside edges - even Albert Ayler lost his way - on the other hand look at Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton - no sign of mission fatigue there.
